Which surfaces each one is for
Both are labeled for hard, non-porous surfaces. Lysol lists countertops, sinks, stovetops, tubs, glazed tile, appliance exteriors, high chairs and even garbage pails. Melaleuca's cleaning guide lists door knobs, light switches and countertops for Sol-U-Guard. Between them, most of the kitchen and bathroom is covered.
Lysol's directions are to spray until the surface is thoroughly wet and wipe, with no rinsing required, except on food contact surfaces, which you rinse with water afterward. To sanitize, Lysol says to leave the spray for 10 seconds before wiping; to disinfect, 2 minutes.
On germ kill, each brand speaks for its own product. Melaleuca says Sol-U-Guard kills over 99.9% of common household germs. Lysol says its cleaner kills 99.9% of viruses and bacteria, and kills SARS-CoV-2 on hard, non-porous surfaces in 2 minutes when used as directed.
What's in each cleaner, in each brand's words
Melaleuca says two active ingredients, thyme oil and citric acid, do the disinfecting in Sol-U-Guard. Its cleaning product guide says the formula uses "the natural disinfecting properties of thyme oil and citric acid" to break through the outer layer that surrounds viruses and bacteria, and presents Sol-U-Guard as a replacement for "products like Lysol."
Lysol's page describes a multi-purpose cleaner in the Lemon Breeze scent, with directions for both cleaning and disinfecting. According to Lysol, its label headline reads "Kills 99.9% of Viruses and Bacteria," and the page does not describe the formula in terms of plant-derived actives.
What the price difference pays for
Sol-U-Guard costs more per 32 oz. By Melaleuca's description, the difference pays for a different kind of disinfectant: one "powered by thyme oil and citric acid" and made without chlorine bleach or quats (quaternary ammonium compounds). Melaleuca's product page says it "kills over 99.9% of common household germs," and both products are EPA-registered disinfectants as each brand presents them.
If a formula without bleach or quats matters to your household, that is what the higher price covers. If it does not, the $4.99 bottle does the same job on paper.
Mixing a concentrate or grabbing a ready bottle
Sol-U-Guard ships as a 16 fl oz 2x concentrate. Melaleuca's EcoSense instructions are to fill the mixing spray bottle with concentrate to the marked line, then add tap water to the fill line. Melaleuca describes concentrates as a way to skip shipping water and cut down on plastic.
The mixing spray bottle is sold separately, so add one to your first order.
Lysol All Purpose Cleaner comes as a 32 oz trigger spray, full and ready to use, with nothing to measure or mix.
Where you can buy each one
Lysol All Purpose Cleaner is sold at major retail stores, and it costs $4.99 for the 32 oz bottle.
Sol-U-Guard is sold directly through Melaleuca. Per 32 oz of finished product, the regular price is $17.00 and preferred members pay $11.39, according to Melaleuca's product page, which is more than double Lysol's $4.99 even at the member price. Forbes ranked Melaleuca No. 2 on its 2026 America's Best Brands for Value list, based on 4.7 million consumer ratings gathered with HundredX.
