Essential oils and tea tree oil: Melaleuca's Pure line

What is Melaleuca oil? How Melaleuca's T36-C5 tea tree oil and Pure essential oils are graded, sized and bought, with the company's own descriptions.

Pure is Melaleuca's essential oil line. It includes the tea tree oil the company is named after, along with ready-made blends, a diffuser, and bath and shower products.

What is Melaleuca tea tree oil?

Melaleuca says its namesake is the essential oil of the Melaleuca alternifolia plant, and that it has "set the standard in quality essential oils for 40 years."

On its Pure page, Melaleuca sells the oil in two grades: T36-C5® Melaleuca Oil and T40-C3® Melaleuca Oil, which it labels "Rare quality Tea Tree Oil." The page doesn't explain what the codes mean. The names are how you tell the two apart when you shop.

Single oils, blends and the three ways to shop

The line has two groups. On the Pure page, Oil Essentials are "single oils right from the source," with "purity and quality guaranteed." Lifestyle Blends are "ready-to-use solutions" meant to fit a busy day.

The same page also sorts products into three shopping categories: My Mind, My Body and My Home. That helps if you know which room or routine you are shopping for but not which oil you want.

How does Melaleuca say its oils are made?

Melaleuca keeps this short. The Pure page says the line's history "started with a trip to Australia" and points shoppers to a "Pure 101" section on how and where the oils are sourced and tested.

Separately, Melaleuca Facts says Melaleuca spends "millions" each year on research into "the best sources, the safest and most effective forms, and the optimal extraction processes" for essential oils and other natural compounds, and that many of its products are protected by patents. The sources don't describe the extraction methods in more detail.

Why some families stick with the Pure line

Melaleuca describes the oils as ready to use "to energize, soothe, relax, or simply bolster your mood."

Convenience is another reason. Melaleuca says it makes more than 450 products and that millions of households shop with it every month, so if you already buy other lines, you can add oils to the same order.

Tea tree oil also shows up outside Pure. Melaleuca says its EcoSense cleaners use "100% pure Melaleuca Oil" alongside thyme oil, citric acid and plant-derived surfactants. The household cleaning products guide covers that line, and the personal care and skin care guide covers the rest of the body-care range.

Which Melaleuca oils would work for your family?

If you want single oils and ready-made blends from one maker, plus a diffuser and bath and shower products in the same catalog, the Pure line may be a good match. The namesake T36-C5 oil comes in the 0.5 fl. oz., 1 fl. oz. and trial sizes listed above.

To buy, note that the Pure page shows each product as "Become a Member to Purchase," with the note "Become a Member and Save 30–50%." Melaleuca Facts says every member is referred by another member and that enrolling as a member costs $19 USD plus applicable tax.
